The Story of The Outlaw eBook Emerson Hough Reviews

Have read a few history books on the old west, but really enjoyed the different perspective, having been only written a few years after the events actually happened.
Was particularly taken by the early 1800's guys - Some of people were nothing more than serial killers.
Also of note is the authors outlook on criminals and justice in the present day (1910 or so) - Sadly. nothing much has changed, at all.
Just read it - Great book - ......................Gaz from NZ
I'm glad I didn't pay for this book. This book was written around 1905, which may explain why parts of the book were so hard to understand and the timeline is confusing. Also some chapters just seem to stop in the middle of a thought and the next chapter has nothing to do with the last chapter.
being a contemporary of at least a part of the times he wrote of, the author gives a look of the west that no modern writer can do. Really insightful.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. It is loaded with numerous anecdotes and brief biographies of villains of the Old West. I appreciate that the author takes care to point out that the "good" guys and "bad" guys were often the same people, depending on what was expedient at the time for them.
I stumbled upon this little gem while searching for free kindle books. I have very much enjoyed the public domain books so thought I"d give it a try. I loved it! I am fascinated by stories and people of the old west, our history as people's of America and the beginnings of this country. How difficult times were long ago but evident that times haven't changed, just different players with different technologies but the heart of a violent man still exists. The writing is superb and colorful and eloquent and I was pulled into the old west for a few days! Hope you enjoy it too.
As with any "frontier" the American west had its share of opportunists, dreamers, hard working folks, bigger than life characters, and dangerous misfits. The book explores lesser known outlaws and lawmen and takes away the layers of myth surrounding many well known characters like Jessee James and Billy the Kid. Pat Garrett's life was interesting and his interview about tracking and killing Billy the Kid told it like it was. For anybody with an interest in America's frontier days this is a great read.
This book was an enjoyable read. Written in 1905, Emerson Hough had access to living eye witnesses for some of the described events. Some of the presented accounts are disputed by careful historians who have researched the records, but obviously Hough's book became a source for other western authors. Particularly appreciate Hough's attention to some lesser known desperados such as Plummer and Helm. Happy that out of print books are still available in electronic format. Too bad the e-book did not reproduce the book's illustrations.
